Sem Kakembo Feels “Revitalised” After Gym Switch Ahead of Hex 35 Title Fight

"Veteran" featherweight Sem Kakembo says he’s entering the best form of his career after switching camps ahead of his Hex Fight Series 35 title clash against Marwan Rahiki on May 31st at Melbourne Pavilion.

Known for his elite grappling and fight IQ, Kakembo told the Australian MMA Podcast that his move from Absolute MMA to Combat 1 was more than just a change of gym, it was a reset for his entire mindset.

“It just felt right… I stayed [at Absolute] so long out of loyalty, but you also have to be loyal to your vision.”

A New Chapter Under Sam Hayward

Kakembo now trains under Sam Hayward at Combat One, home to UFC middleweight Jonas Micallef and a roster of rising Australian talent. While the change might’ve raised eyebrows, Kakembo insists it wasn’t about drama, it was about growth.

“I’ve still got love for all the boys at Absolute. I still message a couple of them. But this new environment… it’s where I feel I’ll level up the fastest.”

The near 30-fight veteran (all combat sport)says the move has brought clarity and purpose to his preparation, both technically and mentally.

Veteran Calm, Killer Instinct

While his opponent Rahiki brings a flashy 4–0 record and highlight-reel finishes, Kakembo isn’t fazed.

“I’ve had more fights than he’s had rounds. I’ve fought all types — I’m ready for whatever version of him shows up.”

And he’s not buying into the hype around Rahiki’s striking either.

“I know where I hold the advantage. If the fight hits the ground — and it likely will — I finish.”

Kakembo credits the new training environment — and his rekindled connection with coach Haywood — for reigniting his passion for the sport. Their history goes back to the amateur ranks, where Haywood once cornered him for a Hex title fight.

“It feels like a full circle moment. We’ve built a smart, versatile camp — and I’m sharper than ever.”
