Kasib Murdoch Looks to Silence Doubters and Claim Hex 35 Gold

Kasib Murdoch eyes the Hex 35 bantamweight title and silences critics as he chases UFC dreams under Alex Volkanovski’s mentorship.

From New Zealand to Freestyle MMA, the Kiwi bantamweight is out to prove he's more than just 'Mini Volk'

Kasib Murdoch’s journey from jiu-jitsu classes in New Zealand to training alongside UFC legend Alex Volkanovski at Freestyle MMA is anything but ordinary. Now, the 24-year-old is set for the biggest fight of his young career: a bantamweight title clash against Liam Gusti at Hex Fight Series 35 on May 31st.

A Dangerous Prospect Struggles to Find Fights

Murdoch, dubbed by some as the “Mini Volk” due to stylistic similarities with the former UFC featherweight champion, has endured a frustrating path through the pro ranks. Despite a decorated amateur career, his pro journey has been slowed by opponents reluctant to face him — a common tale when a fighter is both dangerous and relatively unknown.

"A lot of those guys weren’t taking the fight. I think I was a tough kind of debut to match," Murdoch explained. "Some didn’t want to fight someone with an experienced amateur background."

Earning Respect Through Action

Unable to get matched locally, Murdoch took his talents to Bali, stacking wins against whoever would accept the challenge. The level of opposition was questioned, but Murdoch silenced critics with a dominant win over Australian prospect Jake Piper.

"That fight was important. It showed I’m not just beating guys overseas. When I got someone legit, I handled it."

Training with the Best

Now living in Australia and training under Joe Lopez, Murdoch is eyeing the belt once held by teammate Colby Thicknesse, who recently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). But there’s no bad blood — only motivation.

"Hopefully winning this belt puts a target on my back so I can get the big fights."

Prepared for a Five-Round War

Murdoch’s preparation for this five-rounder has him in peak condition. Facing Liam Gusti — who carries both a promising amateur background and Indonesian heritage — gives the Kiwi a chance to prove his skill against a well-rounded opponent.

"He’s a great dance partner — he wrestles, he strikes. But if I fight how I know I can, I think I smash him."

Eyes on the Future

His motivation is clear: earn respect, gain momentum, and one day, join his mentor Volkanovski and teammate Thicknesse in the UFC.

"I just want to be remembered as someone who loved the sport, fought anyone, and was game."
